One is the world's largest developing country, and the other is the continent with the most developing countries. Although China and Africa are thousands of miles apart, they share a common destiny and a long-standing friendship.
On the broad stage of China-Africa cooperation in the new era, pragmatic cooperation in the field of geosciences has been carried out in an orderly manner - international geoscience cooperation projects have been steadily promoted, international geoscience cooperation platforms have continued to play a role, and international geoscience talent training is in full swing.
Promoting international geoscience cooperation: injecting new impetus into China-Africa cooperation
Science has no borders, and geology has no borders. To meet global challenges and solve the resource and environmental problems faced by economic and social development, it is necessary to continue to expand international exchanges and cooperation in geosciences.
China and African countries continue to promote cooperation in geological surveys and earth science research, and continuously improve the level of basic geological cognition in Africa.
So far, the China Geological Survey under the Ministry of Natural Resources of China has signed more than 30 memorandums of understanding and project cooperation agreements with 18 African geological institutions; and has carried out geological cooperation with more than 10 African countries including Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Liberia.
The scope of cooperation has also been further expanded in recent years. In 2023, the Tianjin Geological Survey Center of the China Geological Survey successfully won the bid for the "Technical Assistance Project for the Ngorongoro-Lengei Geopark in Tanzania" of the Ministry of Commerce of China, and carried out the preparation of the overall planning of the geopark, the exhibition design of the geological museum, and other work, promoting the planning and construction of African geoparks and the protection of geological relics. Cooperate in earth science research. Actively apply for international scientific and technological cooperation projects with geological survey institutions and scientific research institutions in African countries, carry out earth science research on important mineralization belts in Africa, solve the key and restrictive problems of the formation, evolution and mineralization research of ancient cratons and orogenic belts in Africa, and promote innovation in earth science theory and technology.
On March 23, 2023, the China-Africa Geoscience Cooperation Center, jointly built by geological survey institutions, scientific research institutions and universities in China and African countries, was officially established in Wuhan, Hubei. The center adheres to the principles of "co-construction and sharing, open collaboration, green development, innovation and progress", and aims to deeply connect the development plans of China and Africa in the fields of sustainable utilization of energy resources, optimization of land space layout, and geoscience and technological innovation, carry out international cooperation in geoscience research, talent training, etc., respond to and solve major concerns about regional resources and environment, and promote the sustainable development of regional economy and society. The Rabat branch of the China-Africa Geoscience Cooperation Center was established, and the establishment of branch centers in Tanzania, Nigeria and other countries was studied to promote China-Africa geoscience exchanges and cooperation, and organize the China-Africa Geoscience Cooperation Innovation Development Seminar and other activities. This is not only a concrete action to implement the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation-Dakar Action Plan (2022-2024), but also a pragmatic measure to build a "China-Africa Community with a Shared Future" in the new era.
