September 15-25 is the 21st National Science Popularization Day. The theme of this year's Science Popularization Day is "Improve the scientific literacy of all people and work together to build a strong country in science and technology". On the morning of September 20, the "Caring for Smiling Angels and Protecting Mother Yangtze River" science popularization activity hosted by the Jiangsu Geological Society and undertaken by the Jiangsu Yangtze River Dolphin and Aquatic Life Protection Association was held at Changle Kindergarten in Gulou District, Nanjing. This event was strongly supported by the Ninghai Road Sub-district Office of Gulou District, Nanjing. It was also the first cooperation between the Jiangsu Geological Society and the Ninghai Road Sub-district Office to carry out geological science popularization activities into the grassroots and communities. At the event, Hao Xuling, a science popularization teacher from the Nanjing Yangtze River Dolphin and Aquatic Life Protection Association, popularized the knowledge of Yangtze River dolphins and aquatic life to the children of Changle Kindergarten through video materials and science popularization lectures. Teacher Hao not only let the children understand the past and present of the Yangtze River dolphin, but also guided the children to know the biological characteristics, living habits and the current status of Yangtze River dolphin protection in Nanjing. Through mutual questions and answers at the event, the children thought about the relationship between the Yangtze River dolphin as an umbrella species and other animals, and realized the important role of protecting the aquatic biodiversity of the Yangtze River in the protection of the entire Yangtze River ecology. The children said that they should protect the environment and not litter. At the same time, they should start from the small things around them and take practical actions to protect the Yangtze River and the Yangtze River dolphins. After the event, teachers from the Jiangsu Geological Society and the Provincial Dolphin Aquatic Biology Protection Association distributed dolphin color postcards to the children who participated in this popular science event, and presented exquisite dolphin cultural and creative products to the children who actively answered questions. The teacher of Changle Kindergarten said: This event is very interesting. Children have the nature of loving nature and caring for animals. Through this event, they not only increased their knowledge, but also deeply understood the ecological significance of the Yangtze River protection. Teacher Hao told the teachers and students present that the Yangtze River has good water quality, and the Yangtze River porpoises are the first to know. There are more than 60 precious Yangtze River porpoises living in Nanjing. The landmark buildings in Nanjing are framed by the lively porpoises. Every Nanjing citizen must cherish and protect the precious environmental species resources. Secretary-General of the Jiangsu Geological Society, Zhan Gengshen, said that the Jiangsu Geological Society will carry out a number of popular science activities during the National Science Popularization Day.
