On the afternoon of September 23, as one of the 2024 "National Science Popularization Day" series of activities, the "Shanghai Geological Society 2024 Science Popularization Seminar and the First Science Popularization Volunteer Training" was successfully held at the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall. This training was hosted by the Science Popularization Committee of the Shanghai Geological Society, Shanghai Institute of Natural Resources Investigation and Utilization, and Shanghai Planning Exhibition Hall. 12 science popularization volunteers from 5 member units including Tongji University, Geological Mineral Group, and Shentong Metro Group Co., Ltd. and several planning exhibition hall interpreters participated in the seminar and training. The meeting was chaired by He Zhongfa, chairman of the Science Popularization Committee of the Shanghai Geological Society. In combination with the ecological city display content of the planning exhibition hall and the popular science practice of the urban laboratory, interactive science popularization seminars, explanation training, and immersive performance teaching were adopted. The participants explained and interacted on how to introduce the sea-land changes and terrain evolution process of Shanghai over the past 20,000 years, Shanghai ground subsidence and its prevention and control, and geothermal resource utilization. The immersive practice of the urban laboratory was first explained by the guide of the Planning Exhibition Hall. The participants planned the "15-minute community life circle" and "rail transit setting" as planners. At the training site, the participating volunteers shared their experiences and thoughts on how to refine popular science points for students of different ages and the public, how to better express geological science, and the training of popular science volunteer teams. As popular science guides and members of the public, the popular science volunteers gained enlightenment and gains in many aspects such as how to do popular science, how to disseminate scientific knowledge to the public, and in the form of dissemination and expression through training and interactive questioning and discussion.
